Home Networking
Home network is simply a method of allowing devices such as pc’s, notebooks, printers, Xbox, Play Station and more to communicate with one another. If you have two or more computers in your home, a network can let them share the internet, printers, files and much more.

If you're thinking of networking the computers in your home, you have two options to explore.

i. Wired Ethernet Network
ii.Wireless Network

In both of these types, the router/wireless router does most of the work by directing the traffic between the connected devices. By connecting a router to your dial-up, ADSL or Cable modem, you can also allow multiple computers to share one connection to the Internet. You can now purchase all in one modem/routers to save on clutter and can work out to be more cost effective.

A wired network simply means that all devices connected to the network are done so by using Cat5e (network cables) utalising a router.

Cat5e Network Ethernet Cable joins devices together on the Local Area Network (LAN)

A wireless network requires no cables to connect to the wireless access point (utalising a wireless router). This can help reduce costs and can look a lot neater as no cables are run throughout your house to join the devices together.

Wireless Routers Supplied by Marlin Computers

Security measures must be taken to restrict access to your wireless network so no one else can access it.
Most home wireless networks use 802.11g wireless networking, which transmits data at 2.4 GHz with a speed of 54 megabits. A newer wireless standard is 802.11n, which is designed to be faster and offer a longer range than 802.11g. However, the 802.11n standard isn't yet final, and early 802.11n hardware has failed to meet expectations in tests.

We offer a complete setup solution for wired and wireless networks to suit all budgets.

Data Back Up
Backing up data is something many people do not consider until they have lost all their photos and files. There are a few options you have on backing up your data so you do not loose your important files.

RAID

Is a method of combining multiple hard drives for data redundancy in case of a hard drive failure.

RAID 1 Configuration - Gain Data Redundancy

RAID 1 mirrors or duplicates the contents of one drive on another equally-sized drive. Mirroring provides optimal data integrity and immediate access to your data if one drive fails.

CAUTION: This should not be your only method of back up. Due to things such as power surges, both Hard Drives can fail simultaneously.

DVD/CD
Depending on the quantity and size of the data to back up, CD’s or DVD’s can be a fast and easy option to backing up your data.  These are available as internal 5.25” Drives for your PC or a portable drive as available to connect via a USB interface.

DVD Drive

You will require a CD-RW or DVD-RW drive to burn your images to disk.

External Hard Drives
Connect via Esata, USB or Firewire to a Hard Drive in a caddy and you can simply copy and paste files across to the external drive. This is also handy if you run out of space on your Hard Drive.

External HDD

Just remember to be careful with any External Drive as they are not completely shock proof.

Marlin Recommendations

Working with computers every day we do often see people loosing valuable data due to never considering any back up options. Internet sharing within households can cause lots of conflict between kids, and allowing everyone at the same time is a great and easy solution if there is more than one computer in your home. Choosing whether a wireless or wired network will depend on the individual taste, whet they prefer and generally what suits your budget.

We like both types of networks, though there are some security issues with Wireless Networks, though with our help we can help teach you how to make your network secure.

The best way to prevent or block websites is from your router. We can teach you how to use the interface to block particular web sites you do not want people at home to have access to. If you

We personally recommend a machine with a RAID function available on the motherboard. It is also a good idea to do a back up using another method. If the files are not large then go with a CD or DVD burner. If you’re talking about loads of movies and music or anything over 4GB then go an external Hard Drive.
